About the position: Working in corrections is a challenging but rewarding career, where you can make a difference in the lives of others. This positio n works directly with the public and with jail residents on a regular basis , in support of jail operations, and is responsible for providing routine assistance in the areas of cashiering, responding to telephone calls, handling and maintaining resident's personal property, providing commissary, overseeing jail resident workers performing laundry services, and performing public receptionist responsibilities .

DAJD operates the largest county jail system in the State of Washington.

Job Duties
The job description is an overview and is intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. It is not to be an exhaustive list of all the functions and tasks required .
- I nteract with jail residents, the public, and correctional staff on a regular basis. Receive, inventory, store, and issue materials, supplies, clothing, linens, and residents' personal property .
- Label, package, and maintain secure records of resident property, including valuables such as cash, checks, and jewelry.
- Accurately process and document bail monies, official paperwork, resident service requests, and money releases.
- Maintain resident account records, including cash balances and property transactions.
- Ensure physical security of the property room and control access to the commissary.
- Enter and retrieve confidential information using computer systems; maintain cash drawer accuracy and accountability.
- O versee jail residents performing assigned duties . Coordinate and oversee laundry operations, including preparing, folding, and transporting laundry between correctional facilities .
- Drive, load, and unload laundry box trucks for pickup and delivery between correctional facilities .
- Record and track transactions involving institutional clothing, linens, and bedding; monitor inventory levels and reordering needs.
- Dispose of contraband items as directed; collect, store, and release resident property and valuables.
- Process and distribute commissary orders; maintain detailed records for each resident; supervise resident workers.
- Provide clear, courteous customer service in person and by phone; explain program rules, policies, and procedures.
- Perform general office support and other related duties as assigned.
Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
Applicants should have training or work experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties outlined above.
Minimum qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED
- Valid Washington State Driver's License by the time of hire
- Must be 21 years of age at time of hire
- Must have the ability to read, speak, and write in the English language fluently
- Must have the ability to use basic arithmetic to count and reconcile cash with accuracy
Most competitive qualifications:
- Experience in corrections, law enforcement, cashiering, record keeping, and/ or customer service
- Knowledge of office procedures, equipment, and computer use
Additional special requirements :
- Occasionally lift and carry up to 30 pounds
- Frequently bend, stoop, kneel, and crawl
DESIRED: This position may be eligible for additional bilingual premium pay above the base salary. Desired languages currently include Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Russian and Somali, but may be subject to change. To qualify for a bilingual pay premium applicants must demonstrate sufficient language proficiency.

Necessary Special Requirements: The selected candidate for this position will be required to complete a comprehensive background investigation, which includes fingerprinting, a criminal history check, reference checks, and a pre-employment physical.
WORK LOCATION: Employees may be assigned to either of two work locations: The Seattle Division, King County Correctional Facility in downtown Seattle, or, the Kent Division, Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent . Facility/assignments (both locations and shifts) are based on the staffing needs of the department.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Candidates must be willing and able to work in all areas of the facilities including work in confined spaces of a secured adult detention facility. Incumbent will have direct contact with jail residents and the public on a daily basis and may be exposed to a variety of potentially volatile and dangerous situations, including exposure to bio-hazardous material.
WORK SCHEDULE: This is a 40-hour work week, overtime eligible position. Incumbent must be able to work varied shifts which include days, swing, graveyard, holidays, weekends and mandatory overtime. Facilities are operational 24-hours per day, seven days per week. Facility/assignments (both locations and shifts) are based on staffing needs of the department.
