Position Overview

GHR Healthcare is seeking an experienced Pathology Assistant to join a highly respected surgical pathology team in Philadelphia. This is a contract opportunity within a top academic health system, offering consistent weekday hours and an excellent weekly pay package.

The Pathology Assistant will support the diagnostic process in Surgical Pathology by managing and processing surgical specimens under the supervision of a pathologist. This role is ideal for a skilled professional who thrives in a fast paced, detail driven laboratory environment and values collaboration within a multidisciplinary team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Accession, label, fix, and direct surgical pathology specimens in the gross room
  • Perform detailed gross examinations, including orienting, inking, measuring, and dissecting routine and complex specimens
  • Select representative tissue sections based on clinical history and diagnostic requirements
  • Prepare and label cassettes to ensure optimal tissue processing
  • Accurately describe findings through clear, concise, and complete gross dictation
  • Maintain specimen integrity, chain of custody, and compliance with regulatory standards
  • Coordinate accessioning activities with clerical and professional staff
  • Perform quality audits as required
  • Maintain clean, organized, and sterile work areas and ensure proper supply levels
  • Maintain instruments and perform preventive maintenance per policy
  • Work independently while supporting team members and assisting as needed
  • Communicate professionally with pathologists, laboratory staff, and hospital personnel
  • Comply with all hospital and laboratory safety requirements and complete mandatory in services on time
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support the department and health system
Qualifications
  • Pathology Assistant with 2+ years of experience in Surgical Pathology
  • Strong grossing skills with both routine and complex specimens
  • PA(ASCP) certification preferred
  • Excellent attention to detail, organization, and communication skills
  • Ability to work efficiently in a high volume academic laboratory environment
